Facts
Among mechanical systems, pumped-storage hydroelectric plants represent an advanced solution for large-scale energy storage. These plants operate by transferring water between two reservoirs located at different elevations. During periods of low energy demand, excess electricity is used to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper one. When demand increases, the water stored in the upper reservoir is released to the lower reservoir, passing through turbines that generate electricity and contributing to the stability and flexibility of the power system.
Pumped hydroelectric power plants are particularly advantageous for balancing the variability of non-dispatchable renewable sources, such as wind and solar power, allowing for more efficient management of the energy produced and greater integration of renewable energy into the energy mix.
